History of the MMW Tuk Tuk
The company MMW Tuk Tuk was formed in october 1999 by Mr Michael Williams and Maura Williams after a holiday in Thailand.
On return to the UK contact was made with the Department of Transport and the company were given a very negative response, but the company decided to import the first 2 tuk tuks in 2000 and submit the vehicles for testing.
after substantial modifications the two Tuk Tuks passed the very strict motor car SVA Test One was sold to Mr John Taylor for his new company Tuk Tuk Tours of Bath.
John ran his business for many years before leaving Bath for a new life in Spain, the other Tuk Tuk was sold to a private individual for wedding work.
MMW continued to import the vehicles and managed a deal with Tennants Brewery in Glasgow for the use of two Tuk Tuks dressed in Tartan to be used in an advertising campaign.
In later years VOSA scrapped the motor car SVA for Tuk Tuks and introduced the MSVA, this in part allowed the import of less engineered vehicles into the UK including the Indian Bajaj which is often termed as a tuk tuk which of course it is not.
MMW were contacted by a company in Holland and through the efforts of MMW we were the first company to export our vehicles to Amsterdam.
The next stage as we had already registered several vehicles as Private Hire Taxis (plated) was to gain full Hackney licensing. This was finally achieved with North Somerset County Council and the vehicle went into service in Weston Super Mare, the vehicle was fitted with an approved taxi meter.
We often get asked to build custom Tuk Tuks for various clients and being a non mass producer we can and do provide detailing for any particular needs including up to 19in TV/DVD in vehicle media players/i pod adapted music systems/on board phone chargers/Storage compartments.
We have and continue to move forward in Tuk Tuk design and innovation, we were the first company worldwide to introduce EU Approved 3point seat belts/Anti Roll Bars/Dual Circuit Brakes/Side impact protection/Flat floor drivers compartment.
New improvments in the pipeline are LPG/Petrol and also a new Turbo version of the Sprint/independant rear suspension/Lower passenger entry floor.
Over the years we have learnt that whatever changes and improvements we make to our vehicles the competitors will of course and do copy many of the changes we make, we have even had so called customers come and picture our vehicles and inspect our factory premises only to try and emulate our vehicles but this just drives us on forward to still supply the very best tuk tuk money can buy.
The Uk Press once described MMW vehicles as the Rolls Royce of Tuk Tuks and that still stands true to this day, all the vehicles come as standard with wet weather sides/fully lined and cushioned interior roofs/Alloy Wheels/Sterio system/Metallic Paint.
MMW now also supply vehicles into New Zealand/Australia and of course mainland Europe.
MMW tuk tuks can also be converted for many other uses as the picture shows below.
